The dragon's den

The dragon flew over us and then straight for the city. From our vantage point, we were able to see how the creature spew fire all over the place, making fires light up the morning landscape. The crimson color of the flames combined itself with the pink and blue hues of the morning haze, which looked beautiful but wasn’t any of the sort for the people in that place. Some had already died and others would die pretty soon, for sure. They didn’t even have the opportunity to wake up and see what was going on, as life had just caught up with them in the most awful of ways. Death was always an unwelcomed guest.

The group overlooking the city soon split into two groups: some of them were responsible for the release of the creature and ran somewhere to try and contain it. Doing that was ridiculous and they knew it very well, but it would have been worse if they had stayed there, looking at the creature destroy the nearest center of population. They disappeared quickly and left the rest of the people there, only a handful of humans that had no real connection between themselves except the fact that they had learned of the other people’s plans and had attempted to thwart them, failing horribly in a matter of minutes.

They had carried a bomb with them, hoping to seal the cave the creature had been sleeping in for centuries, but the device had failed and now they needed to know what to do. The destruction of their birthplace had begun and it was very possible that the creature would turn it all into ashes before they could do something to capture it or, of course, killing it. It was an obvious idea to have after seeing the creature for the first time. It was such a huge amount of flesh and bones, heavy, with fangs protruding out of its mouth and the deadly capacity of producing the deadliest fires one could ever imagine.

The creature, to be fair, didn’t seem to have much of a mind, but it was precisely that what scared people so easily. They couldn’t know what kinds of things that beast was able to do. The only real problem was that one group of people decided to wake it up and find out, while the others only wanted to keep the creature away from the rest of the planet, sealing it away in order to protect them from a potential catastrophe, that ultimately happened. They had neglected to realized that some of nature’s creations cannot be controlled, no matter how much effort and money people could put into it. It wasn’t like that at all.

So, the creature had awakened, as they had planned, but it had escaped in a matter of minutes and now death and more loomed over them. Several transports carrying personnel from the team that released the creature, cruised through the forest in order to get close enough to attempt some kind of trapping mission, which was obviously not the best idea to have but it certainly was one of the few things they could do, without losing the support of the people.

But when they reached the outskirts of the city, they realized what the dragon had actually done: it wasn’t burning the city randomly, as it had seemed to them from the top of the mountain. The creature had created a perimeter of fire, burning houses, buildings and so on to create some sort of ring to protect its new home. As they couldn’t see it in the air, they sent robots and drones to check for the creature’s position, only to find out that the dragon was sleeping quietly in the center of the city, where a large square surrounded by ancient buildings enclosed a yard made with very old bricks and stones from many parts of the country.

Apparently, the creature was exhausted and had decided to avoid looking for food, as sleeping to gain strength back was the wisest idea, or at least it felt like that. The creature did not seem dangerous at all, but the group behind its release was not going to let it go so easily. They had decided it was better to pretend there was a bigger crisis and use that to propel their own image in the face of such a strange occurrence. So, in a matter of hours, they helped evacuate the whole city by piercing a whole in the fire ring with the help of some very powerful fireman hoses that they had available for other emergencies.

The creature did not notice the humans in the outskirts and slept all day, almost through sunset. Unexpected as they always were, a group of humans, not allies of those idiots that had liberated the creature from the cave, decided to infiltrate the city through another point that the dragon had not completely covered in fire. It was difficult and they risked their lives when doing so, but it was worth it as they believed the creature was not one to be disturbed and they needed it to understand that it was better for its well-being to fly away to some other place, instead of sleeping in the middle of a square, an easy target.

Although many humans infiltrated the city, only three were brave enough to come closer to the creature. As soon as they got too close, the beast opened its eyes and looked straight at them. Then, two of those people ran away and only one remained. The dragon moved its formidable paws in order to get closer and the poor human shook nervously, but did not move from the position it had been when the dragon opened up its eyes. The creature grew as close as it liked and then sniffed the human for a long time. It was as if it was looking for something special, as if it knew something that no human knew anything about.

The dragon then put his nose very close the human’s chest and started building up some fire. Of course, everyone in the vicinity thought that poor person was going to die in moments, burned alive by the fiery flames of a creature that people didn’t even thought existed. But the dragon did not kill the person, it just heated up its nose and then expanded its wings and flew away, somewhere where he wouldn’t be bothered, very far from those greedy bastards trying to make money out of it.

The creature was never really seen again. Some reports came to the ears and eyes of the people in that region, but nothing could never be really confirmed. In time, the fires where finally extinguished and people were able to go back to their homes and enjoy their city again. The ones responsible for the destruction were brought to justice after some private citizens had formed a coalition who brought up proof that they had been planning for a long time the awakening of the creature to use it in many kinds of tests and medical investigations.

The people of the city, however, never thought of the whole things as something inherently bad. After finishing repairs in many parts of the city, the mayor decided to erect a huge statue honoring the dragon, right in the middle of the square where it had slept. Most people in town were very happy about the idea and many children, as well as adults, submitted thousands of designs for the statue. It was unveiled a full year after the events of that day, when they had been awakened by the rumbling of such a majestic and mysterious creature. It became a legend of the region and a story to pass down through the generations.

As for the dragon itself, no one knows where it rests these days. Some say it must have looked for another cave. Other claims that it now takes advantage of its freedom and roams the world changing its home from time to time. That idea is very popular with children, as they seem to enjoy a lot the idea of a travelling dragon. But the truth is that most people just want to see it once again, just once before they each return to the ground, as we all must do.

And maybe it will happen… Maybe it has already happened. But that’s a story for another day.

The Beast

When the man also known as The Beast was caught, everyone was relieved. He had escaped every single police force along his path, as he killed innocent people, and he had finally committed was small mistake. The police had noticed his liking for a certain candy and it was a wrapper they found at a gas station that lead them directly to him. He was found torturing his latest victim on marsh. Fortunately, she was still alive. He had to be shot several times in the legs and spine in order to immobilize him. The police remembered that they couldn’t kill him, no matter how much they wanted revenge for what he had done before. He had killed several people, not only women but children and men too. Besides, the way he did it earned him the nickname Beast from every force chasing him.

Finally in a prison cell, doctor that checked him upon arrival were surprised to see that the damage done by the bullets to his body was minimal. He could still walk and had only a slight limp on his left leg. He was transferred to a maximum-security prison that same day, where he was able to wait for his trial. This offended many of the victims’ families, because they didn’t thought such an animal had the right to a trial. But the law was the law and he was at least entitled to tell the people how he had done it and why. The trial, after all, was also useful as a way to explain everything that had happened and shed a light on such a monstrous behavior. If it ever happened again, authorities and society needed to know why.

For everyone, it was a very hard time. The pictures, the police videos, the details by coroners… It was awful to hear how every body was dumped, how some of them were raped and how he tortured every single one of them. He had no real proceeding; it wasn’t like he just raped the women or something like that. He was erratic and that was proven by the first two weeks of the trial. People had asked for only a week to show evidence and so on but the judge had to change that as he had to cut short every day, because at least one person would get physically sick of all the details of the murders. He knew it was asking too much of every single person to sit there and stand such truths.

At least five of the jurors had to be excused. They all decided to leave the trial as they realized they weren’t fit to stand all those gruesome details that they knew had to come out to the light. They were replaced as they left, and some information had to be repeated for the new jurors in order for them to understand the whole process. That week was the most difficult time in the lives of the family member, more than the moment when they had been notified that their loved ones were dead. Everything hurt up to that point and most of them just wanted it all to finish with the dead of the Beast, they needed to see how his body stopped breathing.

The second week of the trial it was all about the Beast. Bringing him to the courthouse proved difficult, as demonstrators were always there throwing things at him. The authorities didn’t really mind but they just couldn’t allow something worst to happen. It was rumored that some of the family members were planning to kill the Beast and that had to be stopped. The police started bringing him through the back door of the courthouse and they also made a couple of arrests to make people understand that they needed to trust justice and what it stood for. It was understandable that they were angry, very angry for what happened but they had to let justice do what she needs to do. They needed closure and that couldn’t be found by killing a human being. They shouldn’t become him to prove their love.

The first couple of days, he was cooperating so much. But by the third day, he started speaking, saying incoherent things. After the opposing lawyer confronted him, the man attempted to attack him and had to be restrained and tied to the chair he was sitting on. The lawyer asked for the trial not be cancelled for this incident and he used this event to demonstrate to the people why the murderer was called the Beast. He then read a psychiatrist’s report, where he stated that the Beast suffered a very rare syndrome were his brain thought everything and everyone was a danger to his existence. It was the only explanation they could give to killing so many people. But why torture them, they asked? No response.

The next day, it was a very long one. Again, pictures and videos of crime scenes were shown but this time in order to provoke a reaction of the Beast. His lawyer, who was trying to get him life instead of the death penalty, had not spoken much with his own client because he had become very quiet and still. He had to go through all the evidence to, at least, prove the man he was defending was insane and that he belonged to an asylum. He repeated this over and over again during the trial, without little to no positive response from the jury. They were all disgusted by what they had seen and had no space in their hearts or their heads to consider the Beast as only a crazy guy that happens to kill people.

By the end of the week, they finally got some words out of the Beast. He said that he had to kill them all because he was afraid. But when asked if he had any reasons to torture any of them, he was quiet for a while. By the end of the session, he stood up and said that he fought against the forces of the devil and that it had been God himself who had told him what to do and how to do it. This was a low blow for everyone in the courtroom and for everyone in the city, to be honest. Blaming God was ridiculous but it was a step towards that insanity plea and it was hard to fight it because his time on the trials ended just after that.

The following days a couple of family members gave their statements. It was, again, a difficult thing to see and hear. Most of the people in the room cried at some point and how not too, when the details of someone’s death were being given by their wives, husbands, mothers, fathers… The jury was thankful that those statements only lasted for a couple of days. After that, the judge gave the jury four days to decide about this man’s faith. Of course, they didn’t need so much time. The following day every single person had being summoned to hear the verdict: the Beast was going to die by lethal injection. Many of the families were relieved but none of them were happy or anything close to that. They just needed to close that door in their lives, once and for all.

The execution was programmed a month after the trial had ended. Some people complained that it should have been done faster, but they couldn’t get everyone that needed to be there at an earlier date. The governor wanted to be there, as well as at least one member from every family that the Beast had destroyed. They even looked for his parents or relatives and found and old woman that denied the invitation to see a family member die. She said he had not seen him in years and that he had always been “one of those weird kids”. Television crews stationed themselves very early the day of the executions, as well as many people that supported the families. Strangely enough, there were also protesters against the death penalty. Not their best showing.

The lethal injection process was very simple and some people complained, again, that it was too humane for such an animal. But the state had no other way of killing inmates. Firing squads were a thing of the past, there were no electric chairs anymore and communities had successfully avoided the implementation of death by gas. So everyone gathered in very small room and just watched as the man they hated so much was brought from his cell. As they saw the people from prison tie him down, many thought that the last ting their loved ones had seen was probably the face of that man. And that made them so much angrier.

The liquids that went into his body were lowered slowly, one by one. As they saw him closing his eyes and his vital signs going away, they felt their hearts even more broke than before because it was the end of the road and they had gone through all of it together. They pronounced him dead and the governor started to applause but soon stopped. Everyone else looked at him with disgust. Somehow, people were still disgusted by the fact that people had to be killed to teach a lesson, a lesson that maybe no one was really hearing or understanding. Somewhere in the region, another person was being killed. Because the evil inside humans doesn’t stop and it has many layers and faces. The only way is to keep fighting.

Secret in the mist

Mist covered most of the terrain. People could barely see what they were stepping on, so the group that was going through the area had to put a rope around their bodies so they would avoid getting lost. They walked very slowly and they all secretly prayed for the situation to improve. But it had been raining for almost a week, always at sunrise, so the possibility of less mist was far from reality. The group of five people, all botanists, were running out of food and knew very well that if they got lost in that region, they could really endanger themselves as there was only one way out that was easy to follow. There might have been others but no one knew them well and with rain, they may have been cut off.

One morning, they stopped on top of a mountain that had a very smooth surface and decided to drink some water and look around. Again, they couldn’t see much but they had some high-tech equipment that could tell them where it was they were, at least approximately.  But all the devices that they had brought weren’t going to live forever as batteries ran out and they were not of the kind that you can replace. The group leader, Gregorio, was the one that announced that their GPS system had run put of battery and that the last portion of their journey had to be done with other equipment, more inexact, and by a typical map which was not nearly as good as a GPS. But none in the group had lost hope of getting home soon. But they were tired and hungry.

That day, again, they walked into the mist trying to find the path that would lead them to a military post in the high mountains. From there, they could easily ask for help to get them into the city and far away from that marvelous but mysterious world. They had discovered many plants, some new insects and even a mammal that no human had seen before. They were pretty happy with their discoveries but all specimens could get ruined if they did not get to their lab fast. And in only a couple of days that would start to happen and it was their major concern. So they just walked and walked, nonstop every day, trying to get out of the moorland. But everyday the mist seemed thicker, more dangerous.

By the fourth day of their expedition to get out of the area, they found some ruins. At first, they thought they were ancient but when they got closer they realized the building that once stood there had to be from the twentieth century and no earlier. They even found the remains of a phone and lots of metal. What was weirder was when Rebecca, one of the two women in the party, discovered many boxes containing medical supplies. They had dates so they could pinpoint that the facility had been in operation eighty years ago. But what did they do there? That facility had never been mentioned in any maps or reports by explorers. And the area were the remains were scattered was all but small.

The group decided to stay in that area for the night. It was getting colder each passing day and they had to keep the walking controlled because if they got tired, water would run out faster. Only one person, the young Mathias, stayed awake in order to watch out for wild life. Some snakes and even bears were known to inhabit the place and they had to leave someone awake to alert the other if something went on. But when everyone woke up, Mathias was gone. They screamed and walk around looking for him but he would only appear an hour later, with all the bottles and canteens filled with fresh water. He told the group that at night he had heard something and went to fin out what it was and then he discovered a small fall of fresh water.

Gregorio asked him to show them and they all walked by the edge of a cliff until they saw a tiny stream of water going down the rocks and moss into the cliff. It was like a small waterfall and they all drank from it. Water was fresh, as always in these altitudes. They were so happy for the discovery, they all praised Mathias and laughed at jokes and so on. That was until they heard a sound, a sound that traveled up their spines and to their brain. It was an animal but a horrible animal that made a sound, which was a mixture between a wolf’s growl, a bat’s squeal and a human’s scream. It was the most awful thing they had heard and it was close. The group decided to go up again and just continue through the mist, beyond the ruins.

But the mist got thicker and the sound seemed to be following them. They were all nervous, not happy anymore. There was something chasing them or at least following them and maybe that had been going on for several days. Something or someone was doing that noise and they only knew they had to get away from that fast and without looking back. But Richard, who was a very curious older man, had to know what it was that they were scared off. He was the last in the line and he was walking slower until he decided to cut off the rope and stay still. The group soon realized he wasn’t there but they couldn’t find him. They yelled his name but he couldn’t hear them. The mist acted like a wall.

He stood still where had cut off the rope, which he still held in his hand, and tried to open his eyes, all he could. He tried to hear more, to acute his senses but the sound had vanished. He could only hear the wind that had started blowing a bit. He then turn around to catch up with the group but he soon realized that wasn’t going to be easy. He walked around for at least thirty minutes until he gave up and was starting to imagine how he could go back to the waterfall and have some more fresh water. But then something launched itself on Richard and even the group, which was not that far, could hear his screams and the sound that had followed them again. Now, everything seemed amplified and they started running.

They just ran and covered their ears. They just knew that the voice they had heard was Richard but they preferred to think it was their imagination at work. Which was true was that, if he were ok, he wouldn’t be able to find them anymore. The group suddenly stopped and realized they had finally reached the point in the national park that hey had intended to reach since the beginning. It was the military base. Gregorio rushed inside and the rest of the group stayed outside, still hoping that Richard could find his way to them. They drank some water and then Gregorio came out of the base and just vomited profusely. Everyone was confused. Consuelo, the other woman in the group, ran to him and asked him what happened.

Gregorio couldn’t speak at first. They gave him water to wash his mouth and drink. When he finally spoke, he was livid, white as the mist hat still covered every part of their surroundings. He told them that inside the base, there was no one. Instead, their bodies were everywhere, pieces and remains all over. And they were relatively fresh, possibly preserved by the cold temperatures of the mountain. Something, he said, had attacked them. No human had done it because they were no weapon marking in the walls or the floor. Besides, and everyone thought he was going to vomit again, it seemed that their bodies had been ripped apart, as if a gigantic beast had attacked them.

And just then, the noise was heard again, closer than before. They all concluded, without even speaking, that the sound and the beast that had attacked the base where one and the same. Consuelo checked her bad fast and pulled out a flare gun. Mathis did the same and soon they had three flare guns in their hands. As they were botanists and explorers, it made no sense to have a gun. But flare guns were used for rescue. They also had a machete to cut off samples and a few knives. They gathered on one side of the military base and decided to study the map fast. They knew that from there, there was a trail that would lead them to a road that ended in a small town. The journey was many kilometers long, but it was worth the try.

Soon, they were walking through the trail but they didn’t get very far. The mist got thicker and the moon had come out, announcing night. And then, without any warning, the beast jumped on Mathias and cut off his head. The women screamed and Gregorio shot a flare at him. And then they saw the creature in all its might and realized, horrified that it had a human face and it seemed insane and in pain. The shot more flares, which seemed to confuse the creature. They then ran the opposite direction and just ran, without seeing behind. They thought they would die very soon but the creature didn’t follow them. Hours after, they found the road and, eventually, they reached the small town.

Military personnel picked them up and the fait of their base was revealed. But it was to late. All the revelations and the truth had come too late and now there was something out and about, a creature beyond anyone’s imagination whose only desire was to kill.
